Did prophet Muhammed allow his companions to rape female war captives (even if they were married)?

There is a prophetic statements in Sahih Muslim about prophet Muhammad who sent his companions to raid a tribe. The companions raided the tribe and captured many women. The statement tells that the companions refused to have SEX with those enslaved women because those women were married, but prophet Muhammed gave them the permission to HAVE SEX with those women (even if they were already married). 8. You only think it's horrible from the perspective of fifteen hundred years later. Back then, this is what people did. All people. So Muhammad did as good as everybody else. So you can't fault him. I just finished reading Reza Aslan's book, "No god But God," a very valuable history of Islam. Basically, Muhammad set up a good, new, egalitarian religion and society. Then Muhammad's successors messed it up bad. Twisted what Muhammad intended. Not just the terrorists, but lots of Muslims. Muhammad intended a revolutionary level of tolerance, but you don't see that very much in Islam today.
9. According to the Qur'an and Hadiths, it certainly appears that way. I like the later Suras of the Qur'an, which were actually written first. They are much more peaceful and poetic, and virtually absent of controversial content. It's the Suras in the front of the Qur'an which read more like a "rules of war" manual, and preach division among the God fearing people of the world in the 7th century. Sometimes I wonder if the Qur'an contains only the memorized dictation of Mohammad, or whether other authors contributed to the "final version" of the Qur'an when it was finally written down and authorized by Uthman et. al Peace
