Pardon by King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia: Good example of compassion for Islamic World or not?
Do you think that the pardon offered by King Adullah of Saudi Arabia, regardless of motivation, should seve as an example to the rest of the Islamic world about true compassion? http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20071217/wl_mideast_afp/saudiwomenrapejusticepardon_071217213754;_ylt=AnFKByr5H.8flkdFZP4lE6Os0NUE I said should this serve as exmple of compassion to Islamic world, notto Aericans. I just love it when people can not read. Regardless of how this post is framed. It Reminds us of what true Islamic world is really like.

- It is a good first baby step. 200 lashes would have killed the girl - it was a death sentence.
- no it should have never came to that
- Is this the part where I say how grateful I am? oh yea.
- They are our b-i-t-c-h-e-s
- More like bowing to international pressure for propaganda reasons. When women can vote , drive a car or even show their face in Saudi Arabia , maybe we can talk about "compassion". Until then my opinion about them stands.
- Don't talk about the "Islamic World" when you clearly have no idea what most of it is like. Do thy have laws and punishments like that in Turkey, Egypt, Malaysia or Indonesia? No. This is a brutal dictatorship - not a religous issue. Thugs like this should never get our support no matter how much oil they have or how many token examples like this you can find. When you get caught with your hand in the cookie jar of course you put the cookie back. That doesn't represent a good example. I will be impressed when King Abdullah stops treating the concept of human rights as a joke, when he abolishes laws that put them in this position and starts treating his own people with something other than contempt. We were using cases such as this as a justification for war with Afghanistan. For the few high profile ones that are overturned like this how many do you think just fly under the radar? Until Saudi Arabia clean up thier game our relationship with them is a stain on everything the US is supposed to stand for.
- Islamic compassion is an oxymoron. He only did this because of the international outrage at this case.
- It was not compassion. It was caused by political pressure. The Bush family are great friends with the royals in Saudi. When indignation in this country reached a fever pitch, the Saudis caved. We are their best customers, after all. It will make little difference in changing the archaic customs of that country and its treatment of women. Nor will it stop their young men from becoming terrorists. It will simply keep the Sheiks and the bin Laden family in continued luxury with our patronage, while we pretend the Saudis are our allies.
- Since everyone can only theorize because none of us can read King Abdullah's mind, we do not know the true reasoning for his decision. But it most certainly should set an example for the entire Islamic World. It has to start somewhere.
- I think the Saudi's crumbled to world pressure, but I think it is a message to the Islamic world that the world views their methods of punishment as rather barbaric. In this age of mass communication, not much remains hidden and I think it is good for them to see how the world views their laws.
