If I take a dump on the Quran and call it "art", can I get grants/scholarships?
I was reading about "Piss Christ". In case you haven't heard about it: Piss Christ is a controversial photograph by American photographer Andres Serrano. It depicts a small plastic crucifix supporting the body of Jesus Christ submerged in a glass of the artist's urine. Some have suggested that the glass may also contain the artist's blood. The piece was a winner of the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art's "Awards in the Visual Arts" competition, which is sponsored in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, a United States Government agency that offers support and funding for artistic projects Anyhow, I was thinking of creating my masterpiece "Crap Quran" and trying to get funding out of it. Will it work?

- Whatever floats your boat.
- why not? anything can be art if they say it isn't punch them in the ovaries :)
- No but you could piss of people that don't deserve that treatment. weather you belive in it or not, I wouldn't like if a muslim took a sh*t on the bible.
- i dont recommend doing that.. ure gonna get alot of looks and ull probably get blown by some terrorist.
- This would probably be a hate crime. You can only crap on the bible. :-(
- probabaly won't work. since religion is BS anyway, it is an apposite proposal.
- It all depends on what region of the U.S. you live in. I would imagine that out in Los Angeles, you might get rave reviews. In Texas, you might get sent to the insane asylum.
- In matters of what is considered art, it isn't art just because you say it is. It's art if others say it is.
- Reported my friend....
- while some artists do hokey things. hokey people are not ever artists. and now would be about the poorest timing ever to pull such a sh*ty stunt. do you like to inciting war and terrorism or what? think.
- Well, anything can be art these days, these are called conceptual art. Which means you need a concept for your actions. It would make no meaning to just crap on a Quran and just call it art without a message behind it. People may ask, why a Quran, why not a bible? You might even end up insulting a few people or the religon. Just to answer the question, I don't think you idea will work, but give it a try, and I might see your name on the newspaper one day.
- As it turns out, "Piss Christ" is a complex and even reverent work by an artist of exceptional talent. You're just some hack with an eye for profit. There is a difference, and I would expect it to become apparent when you have to write a grant application and can't explain what the h*ll you're doing. No-one seems to understand that "Piss Christ" is not shock art. If you actually look at it reasonably, you'll find that its intent is not really to offend -- at least, that isn't it's primary meaning. A more interesting reading might go like this: the figure of Christ is endlessly reproduced in all sorts of commercial and religious forms, and the idea of immersing it in urine and blood is sort of an attempt to reclaim in the image of Jesus a sense of the human and the individual. From this point of view, "Piss Christ" is born of a profoundly religious impulse on part of the artist -- it is not a statement of disrespect like crapping on the Qur'an.
- you could take a chance on alienating the great spirit and messing up your chances for eternity, but only in america would such an absurd gesture be accepted as human.
- that piece is just shock art and it is boring and played out. I'm surprised any major agency gave it an award. shock art died long ago if you ask me.
