How do we know women are suppose to cover their hair if the quran does not explicitly say so?
but how do we know exactly how much we have to cover? lifestyles change overtime, and throughout societies, the amout of skin we need to cover to hide beauty is different (for example, united states vs arab countries. here they wont eye you if you are hijabless but modestly dressed but, in syria or jordan they DO).

- If you believe Quran was revealed without a Prophet, you have freedom to understand Quran as you wish. But, if you accept Quran as well as the Prophet, you have no right to raise this question.
- True because early Muslims rulers tried to screw up Hadiths. Particularly in the time of Bani Umayya, there were factories for fake hadiths. Now there are many fake hadiths. Any Hadith which does not contradict Quran maybe correct hadith but not sure.
- Quran doesn't tell you how to pray, either?? or a lot of other things.....That was the basic reason of sending a prophet with the book ...So that he can practically performs what Allah has ordered in Quran.....
- That's the point, Allah wants to give women the freedom to choose for themselves. Islam is not a strict and extremist religion like some Muslims believe. Extremism has no place in Islam. I don't wear hijab and I don't think it's obligatory, if anyone has a problem with that then that's too bad. I respect those who choose to wear it, but anyone who doesn't think it's necessary has the right to do whatever they want and to dress as they please, it's a free world! Besides, hijab is just a trivial thing, there are more important things in Islam. Religion is supposed to teach you to love your neighbor, help others etc etc. not how to dress.
- Because the Qur'an explains that women MUST cover, and Rasulullah (saw) explains WHAT women must cover, and the Sahabah, the greatest of the Muslims, DEMOSTRATE what women must cover.
- In Hadiths. Have to see if they exactely express what the Prophet said (and thought). Everything has to be contextualized in the History. Habits in the Middle East and 1'400 years ago, cannot be compared with habits of other regions of the world (in the past and/or nowadays and/or in the future). It îs people who misunderstand what Prophets said. And so we have all this mess about Religions and haram/halal, Hell/Heaven .... Cover hair is an habit of that region, to protect women (sandy place) from the sand going around through the wind. It is an instrument related to higienical matters. Everywhere you are/live, you should think with your mind which is the best way to behave: it is a matter of being reasonable. Otherwise, you are and extemist/fanatic. This doesn't help a lot in humans relations (which are the ones which will make a difference between war and peace). Holy Books are supposed to say a huge amount of things which actually they did not even mean to say!!!
- The Quran doesn't command women to cover our hair , that's obvious . It is the Ulama's and cronies who made up these rules , and we must understand that they are a bunch of perverts who also beleive in getting 72 virgins in heaven . In the Bible , a woman's hair is considered as disgraceful to be shown in public and doind so means thatshe is no longer under the dominion of her husband . The Quran encourages modest behaviour so that we reach a higher level spiritually , major difference where ends of means are concerned . The Ulama's do beleive in the Bible and Hadiths more than the Quran judging by the crap they have produced , it's not Islam it's a self invented belief system based on traditions and their false desires which they call Islam .
- why did ALLAH sent prophet MOHAMMED to us? to teach u and me and the others how to proctice ur religion so hijab is nessesery for girls sister
- You know.. I think i have to agree with B I was discussing this very issue with my husband.. we are saudi by the way if some of you dont know me anyways.. we were discussing how the Quranic verse about pulling your cover over your bussom, doesnt specifically mention the "face"... In islam yes.. its not supposed to be demandingly strict.. its a tolerant religion.. Allah says he doesnt make things hard on us unless we make it hard on ourselves first.. Some things in the Quran are left up to us to interpret to the best of our knowledge.. So sometimes two interpretations are allowed and both acceptable.. There are many instances where people asked examples from the prophet on other situations.. and two different examples came out and he accepted both.. this I also agree with "B".. if you are a decent modest women.. hijab can also come from within.. you soul.. if you are a good women and you dress modestly and conduct yourself in a good manner, you wont attract unwanted attention cause of the sheer way you hold yourself and the respect you demand and get... .. Hair showing , face showing or not...
- The verses which speak of this subject in the Quran use the Arabic word 'Khimaar" which is translated into English as veil. Now a veil, lets say a wedding veil or funeral veil cover the head, the neck, and chest. From a linguistic point of view, a "khimaar" is such a cover according to the Arabic language. So from this word we know what to cover. The details of the cover are from the sunnah, just like the details of praying, fasting, etc. That's why we rely on Quran and sunnah as sources of guidance.
