  1. Wahabbis are Sunnis; Wahhabism is a hardline sect of Sunni Islam born in Saudi Arabia. At the core level, however, Shi'a and Sunnis believe essentially the same things. The primary differences stem from who the two groups believed should inherit leadership of the Islamic faith from Muhammad after he died... the people who became the Shi'a believed his daughter's son, Ali, should take the mantle of leadership. The people who became the Sunnis believed that a senior, non-related male leader from the community (as agreed upon by the community of believers) should lead the new faith. The two branches have been at odds over that and other minor differences ever since; but otherwise their beliefs are essentially the same.
