Why did prophet Muhammed kill people who opposed him?

Through my reading in Islamic history I found that prophet Muhammed used to kill people who opposed him. The list includes Asmaa Bint Marwan, Om Karfa, Abu Rafi'a, Kinana Ibn Al Rabie, Sowaylam and all his party members, and many others. I understand that prophet Muhammed came with new teachings that were revolutionary by the time, thererfore, why did he have to kill his opponents? he had the logic and the teachings, so why did he use the sword? (please do not COPY & PASTE answers. Just try to answer to the point. 8. Prophet Muhammad didn;t kill ppl who opposed him. The only killing that was ever done in that time from the muslims was when they were in war with those who opposed their beliefs and spreadings of one god (Allah(the same god as all the others)).

While there were many attempts of assassination made on Muhammad, may Allah exalt his mention, (most famous was the night that Ali took his place in bed while he and Abu Bakr escaped to Madinah), he did not allow his companions to slaughter any of those who had been involved in these attempts. Proof for this is when they entered Makkah triumphantly and his first words were to command his followers not to harm such and such tribes and so and so families. This was one of the most famous of his acts of forgiveness and humbleness. Military combat was forbidden for the first thirteen years of prophethood. The desert Arabs did not need anyone to tell them how to fight or do combat. They were experts in this area and held feuds amongst tribes that lasted for decades. It was not until the proper method of warfare was instituted by Allah in the Quran, with proper rights and limitations according His Commandments, that any retaliation or combat was sanctioned. Orders from Allah made it clear who was to be attacked, how and when and to what extent fighting could take place. Destruction of infrastructures is absolutely forbidden except when it is ordained by Allah in certain instances and then only according to His Commands.Cursing and invoking evil actually came to the prophet, may Allah exalt his mention, from his enemies, while he would be praying for their guidance. Classic example is that of his journey to At-Taif where the leaders would not even hear him out nor offer so much as the normal courtesy called for and instead they set the children of the street against him, throwing rocks and stones at him until his body was bleeding so much, blood filled his sandals. He was offered revenge by the angel Gabriel, if he would give the command, Allah would cause the surrounding mountains to fall down upon them destroying them all. Instead of cursing them or asking for their destruction, he prayed for them to be guided to worship their Lord alone, without any partners.Prophet Muhammad, may Allah exalt his mention, claimed every person who is born is born in a state of ISLAM (submission to God), as a Muslim (MU-Islam means; "one who does ISLAM" i.e.; submits to God's Will and obeys His Commandments). Answer: A few selected verses from the Qur’an are often misquoted to perpetuate the myth that Islam promotes violence, and exhorts its followers to kill those outside the pale of Islam. 1. Verse from Surah Taubah The following verse from Surah Taubah is very often quoted by critics of Islam, to show that Islam promotes violence, bloodshed and brutality: "Kill the mushriqeen (pagans, polytheists, kuffar) where ever you find them." [Al-Qur’an 9:5] 2. Context of verse is during battlefield Critics of Islam actually quote this verse out of context. In order to understand the context, we need to read from verse 1 of this surah. It says that there was a peace treaty between the Muslims and the Mushriqs (pagans) of Makkah. This treaty was violated by the Mushriqs of Makkah. A period of four months was given to the Mushriqs of Makkah to make amends. Otherwise war would be declared against them. Verse 5 of Surah Taubah says: "But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is oft-forgiving, Most merciful." [Al-Qur’an 9:5] This verse is quoted during a battle. 3. Example of war between America and Vietnam We know that America was once at war with Vietnam. Suppose the President of America or the General of the American Army told the American soldiers during the war: "Wherever you find the Vietnamese, kill them". Today if I say that the American President said, "Wherever you find Vietnamese, kill them" without giving the context, I will make him sound like a butcher. But if I quote him in context, that he said it during a war, it will sound very logical, as he was trying to boost the morale of the American soldiers during the war. 4. Verse 9:5 quoted to boost morale of Muslims during battle Similarly in Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 5 the Qur’an says, "Kill the Mushriqs where ever you find them", during a battle to boost the morale of the Muslim soldiers. What the Qur’an is telling Muslim soldiers is, don’t be afraid during battle; wherever you find the enemies kill them. 5. Shourie jumps from verse 5 to verse 7 Arun Shourie is one of the staunchest critics of Islam in India. He quotes the same verse, Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 5 in his book ‘The World of Fatwahs’, on page 572. After quoting verse 5 he jumps to verse 7 of Surah Taubah. Any sensible person will realise that he has skipped verse 6. 6. Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 6 gives the answer Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 6 gives the answer to the allegation that Islam promotes violence, brutality and bloodshed. It says: "If one amongst the pagans ask thee for asylum,grant it to him, so that he may hear the word of Allah; and then escort him to where he can be secure that is because they are men without knowledge." [Al-Qur’an 9:6] The Qur’an not only says that a Mushriq seeking asylum during the battle should be granted refuge, but also that he should be escorted to a secure place. In the present international scenario, even a kind, peace-loving army General, during a battle, may let the enemy soldiers go free, if they want peace. But which army General will ever tell his soldiers, that if the enemy soldiers want peace during a battle, don’t just let them go free, but also escort them to a place of security? This is exactly what Allah (swt) says in the Glorious Qur’an to promote peace in the world. 13. That's what islam is about. The koran, 8:12, says to cut off the heads and fingers of the non-believers. The terrorist know this, they've read the koran. Apparantly he didn't have the logic and the teachings. "Sami" says I'm reading out of context. This is the ENTIRE context of the koran. The terrorists know this, that's why they do what they do. 14. Muhammad was a nomadic Arab in another age. Keep in mind that for many civilizations throughout history it was not uncommon to kill your opponents. Look at the Inquisition (the Catholic Church certainly considered themselves enlightened) or what we did to the American Indians (and these acts come after Muhammad). Only in very recent history have many concluded that killing ones adversaries is probably less humane than diplomacy' yet we still do (look at what we are doing in Iraq) for example. The fact that he was enlightened might have tempered his blood lust (perhaps he would have killed many more if he were a real dolt). The Muslim religion is full or gore and killing (sorta like the Bible). Whenever the Muslims conquered a people they gave them a choice convert or be beheaded. Most of their holidays celebrate victories on the battlefield where 40,000 an example of the enemies were killed. Christ is one of the true rare exceptions (that's why he was considered such a rebel "Love you enemy" Now that was radical andit is still radical thinking, even today.

16. it's gonna be extremely hard to convince people otherwise. but like sami mentioned. that the koran was revealed on occasions and god's guidance ( message wasn't revealed over night ) prophet mohamed was a true servant and messenger of god as he did exactly what he was asked to do. through out history its well known that the prisoners of war were never treated better than when they were pow of an islamic army even in their own countries of europe. for example the prisoners of war during the crusades. and how saladin was such a noble man and how he treated his prisoners. and to talk about beheading. here's what you dont know it is a scientific fact that beheading is the least painful death any living thing can feel. whether humans or animals. you almost dont feel any pain. certainly not like being stabbed or shot. thats why when god ordered muslims to sacrifice a sheep on the adha feast he clearly said to cut the animals head off as it's forbidding to torture any soul. also muslims are even forbidding from things like cutting off plants for no use (trees,flowers any plant as it has a soul) so any one claims that muslims torture others in the name of god is a false claim. even those terrorists who kidnap Innocent people and kill them for political issues as they think they are true muslims they cut thier heads off for the least pain. and if u watch the news recently and see all those hostages who have been released every single one of them said that they were treated with kindness and they were never abused whether it was the american female journalist cant remember her name or the Italian group who were kidnapped in iraq
17. first ,have you read what those people did to deserve getting killed? you just say that as if they were just passers by who were snatched and killed for no reason. and please note that some books where you get these information are considered having false stories ,so please check your resources first .
18. It saddens me greatly when people get angry at a question / or answer a question in an abusive way. Please, can't we just the respect the person asking the question and give a mature answer? There is a lot of incorrect information on the web that may be biased and websites set up for the very purpose of misleading people. I have checked out several sites on Islam and I was shocked by the contents of the information and again the misinterpretation of the Koran’s and the slander of the Prophet Mohamed for the very purpose to make people shun and hate Islam and Muslims portraying them as uncivilized terrorists who kill, torture and oppress women beyond belief. It's really no wonder Muslims & Islam get that kind of reaction. To answer your question, I'm afraid to say that the information you have read is very misleading and incorrect. He did have the logic and the teaching and precisely because of that he did not need to kill. In fact he was opposed to killing and he was a teacher of mercy in / out of wars which were conducted against those who fought his followers and these wars were not initiated by the Muslims. I can recite so many versus from the Koran to prove what I'm saying in the correct essence of the religion and the proper contexts in which the Koran’s verses came about, but I believe that Biomimetik, Sami & grail hunter have covered that area very well to a large extent. I also agree with Lily that you should please check you resources as I mentioned earlier. Many of the websites I have come across are hosted / prepared by Jews or Christians who oppose Islam. Did you know that about 75% of islamic terrorist websites are hosted in the U.S.? You may want to try to read from a truly Islamic website, where the information is prepared by Muslims to get the real essence of the religion. Finally, with all the child molesting done by priests, do you think it would be fair to judge Christianity as a religion that approves child molesting, rape and homosexuality. I should hope not because that would be crime against Christianity, don’t' you agree? I am a Muslim female and I respect all religions just as the Koran’s and my Prophet taught all Muslims to do. I have a University degree and I work in a multinational bank, I drive to work and I do not wear a veil, yet. I am not oppressed or treated as a third class citizen just for being born a female. 19. You should be the one to go and study the history of Islam. Every single war that the Prophet forth were defensive. He never started any offence and He never continued fighting if the oppressor withdrew.
