Why do "honor killings" routinely occur in Islamic societies?

An "honor killing" is when a father, brother, or cousin of a girl kills the girl because they suspect that she has had sexual relations with a man. Even when tests confirm her chastity, she is still killed. The Islamic community seems to look the other way when this happens. Is forgiveness not part of the Islamic religion? Why are they so intolerant? http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601102&sid=ato5csz7na1k http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070125/ap_on_re_mi_ea/jordan_honor_killing http://www.turks.us/article~story~HonorKillingsPlaguePakistan~mode~print.htm http://www.jnewswire.com/article/1563

  1. Its a backward society, they wont ever move on.
  2. This practice is derived from rights granted to men under Sharia Law and obligations ordained in the Quran. Sharia is 'The Law' practiced in fundamentalist Islamic countries even if it is rewritten as modern constitutional law. It also influences to a large extent the laws in 'moderate' and even secular Islamic countries. Sharia Law was derived from the Quran and the Hadith of Muhammed and is a sad commentary about the state of that religion in today's society.
  3. These people are stuck in the middle ages. We should have nothing to do with them until they either mature enough to join the rest of the world, or make themselves extinct.
